Writing sales letter direct response copy to a non-business consumer typically requires a bit of hype ... big claims that get the attention of the average individual who get a ton of mail every week, much of it that they consider junk mail.  If the teaser copy on the envelope is just right for the type of consumer the writer is targeting for his message, the envelope will get opened.  If the headline has a big enough promise that hits home with the reader, they'll read the letter.

A B2C direct mail letter (business to consumer) may be one or two pages if it is meant to just create a lead for the company.

The letter for a low cost product may be two to four pages long, while a medium cost or higher cost product may take 8 pages, 12 pages, 16 pages, even 24 pages or more of skillful, creative and persuasive copywriting.

Writing for the B2B Market is Different ...
The B2B market is big on Lead Generation letters or emails to provide an interested contact for the company's sales team.  This may be a postcard, an email, a one or two page letter, etc. 

The B2B copywriter also writes ad copy, case studies of the business clients or customers who have had good success using the product they make.  Success stories in the form of case studies are used to promote a business and their products or services.  It shows they get results.  Copywriters write about 8 pages on average and writing one case study can pay $1000 to $3000 on average. 

The business customer often wants and needs a great deal of information in order to make a good buying decision.  The products or service packages being sold by a business may be a few hundred dollars to a million dollars.  With higher priced goods or services, technical detail is needed, often demonstrations are needed, how to information, and more.  These content assignments also pay very well, from $500 to $5000 or more and many pages of content for print or a website are needed.

What is also common in the B2B market is that the copywriter may need to write a series of various letters and articles, all that pay high fees to the copywritier.  It takes many written and face to face sales contacts to bring a customer to a buying decision in the business market. 

If you don't like hype ... good.  The B2B market does not typically like or respond favorably to hyped promises.  They do want the benefits but they want someone to show them logically the benefits of a product or service, supporting information for the benefits shown and technical data.

The B2B market needs a great deal of marketing copy and copywriters to handle these projects.  Pick a B2B niche based on business type or assignment type, learn the trade and make a lot of money.  Six figure incomes are common writing for the B2B  market.

I’m talking about case studies. (Or “success stories,” as they're known in some industries.)

Case studies are short pieces that describe how a company or organization solved a challenge with a product or service — and what the results of solving that challenge were.

Unlike white papers — which are longer documents that define a business or technical problem and present a new or better solution to solve that problem — a case study is basically a short “before and after” story:

Acme Corp. had a problem with X. They looked for a solution until they found Product Y. They bought and implemented that product. And since then, they’ve enjoyed A, B and C benefits.

Simple, right?

Case studies can vary in length, but the sweet spot for these pieces is about 1 or 2 pages — or about 800 to 1,200 words long.

They’re, by far, some of the most lucrative AND in-demand copywriting projects in B2B. In fact, along with white papers and articles, case studies are one of the projects my clients request from me the most.
